Keith, If your gauge showed you had good oil pressure and you wiped out two lobes on a new cam it was more than likely caused by improper break in of the new cam. When you assemble the motor the lobes of the cam and the bottoms of the new lifters should be liberally coated with moly grease. Then, when you start the motor up for the first time it should be run at no less than 2000 RPM and not held at a steady speed for at least 20 minutes. It should especially not be allowed to idle during this time. This allows the cam and lifters to break in without galling against each other. If this step is left out when you first fire up an engine with a new flat tappet (not a roller) cam it's highly likely you will eat up a lobe or two in no time flat.
