Oops, correction/clarification. If it's a 64 or 65, the SS options could be ordered with the 6-cyl as well. In 64, the VIN begins with the number "4" and the next two numbers for a 6-cyl SS are "57" and a V8 is "58". In 65, the VIN begins with a "1" and the 6-cyl is "37" while the V8 is "38" for the SS. From 66 to 68, the SS was a separate model and included the 396 engine and the SS VIN began with "138" while the Malibu VIN was "136". From 69 to 71, the SS was again an option but there was no indication in the VIN or cowl tag.
