Not all build sheets were stashed in the car. Once an assembly line worker was done with it, he could/would stash it wherever convenient. It could be put in the car or in the trash - his choice. There was not a GM policy on this. But, usual places to find one are tucked in the springs of the seats (front or rear), on top of gas tank (found mine there), inside door panels, under carpet, taped to back side of inner fenders, and probably half a dozen other places. There were not standard practices, and I believe that earlier years did not use build sheets at all.
