Recipe for shop disaster: take one pit that people can fall into add many years of oil and grease to the floor and walls waft in some solvent and gasoline fumes drop in one incandescent light for a ignition source and try to find the way out through the flames without bashing your head on the bottom of the car :( Now there are some things you can do to make them safer: 1) build or buy grates to cover it when not in use 2) keep it clean We put down cardboard and then disposed of it as soon as it got oily. c) suck out fumes with an air exhaust (made out of vacuum cleaner PVC and poured into the walls) close to the pit floor and a fan on the far end for when you are using it.
