For "What it's worth", I do not agree that turning off scripting or Java or
any other features on your browser is a good idea. You will miss a great
deal of the new technology and will not be able to fill out some forms, etc.

Rather, what I think everyone is dealing with is called "spyware". When you
download "free" software, they will stick a little piece of code into your
registry files and a lot of other places and these "spys" collect
information on your habits and report back to the owner of the spyware. You
may have heard of "cookies" that do the same thing, but cookies are not
hidden and you can edit them out.

There is a company called Lavasoft that has developed spyware detection and
will provide you a means of cleaning up your computer. Yes, it is free, and
I have no idea why it is free, but it works. If you do not believe me, then
go to your search tool and put in the word "spyware" and you will turn up
hundreds of sites saying how good this product works.

I have a son that uses KaZaA software and it has loaded up over 40 separate
"spys" before he is done using it.

You can download a free copy of Ad-aware at:

http://www.lsfileserv.com/index.html

I have used it for over a year. Once you remove all the "spys" from your
computer, you will find the "popups" disappear or are reduced to practically
nothing. Also, clean up your cookie files from Netscape and clear
everything out of one called "Temporary Internet Files" from Internet
Explorer.

After that, you will think you have a new computer!
