Thanks Glenn,

I had heard elsewhere the story about Carter buying 10 years worth of
supply, and selling out way before they expected. Interesting to hear how
Edelbrock got involved. It also reminds me that one of the reasons I chose
Edelbrock over Carter was that I was told that it was the same body but
"updated" (presumably that means better) internals.

The history of the AFB for those who are interested, is that years ago
Carter made them, hence the Carter AFB. This was when Carter was owned by a
company called ACF (if memory serves). At some point in the 80's, ACF sold
the carter brand to Federal Mogul. They made what they thought was 10 years
worth of carburators and scrapped the tooling. The assumption was that the
design would become obsolete due to emission controls and electronics. They
ran out of carburetors well before 10 years, (I think it was around 1986 or
7 that your couldn't get your hands on a new one anymore). Edelbrock,
seeing an opportunity to make a buck, negotiated a deal for the patents with
Federal Mogul. They contracted with Weber to cast the bodies from the old
design & FM patents. They (Edelbrock) redesigned the internals somewhat.
FM retained the right to use the design also, which is why you can buy the
carburetor from both companies. About 5 years ago, the last I was
associated with FM, they used a version of the original internals. So both
Edelbrock and Carter carbs look similar and use the same casting, but
somewhat different internals.

Glenn
