Mark, 1966-68 the SS was a separate model depicted by the vin, from 1969-72 the SS became an option package, and the only way to tell proof positive it is an SS, is to have the build sheet or pop that came with the car when purchased new, an exception is in 1972 the 454 could only be ordered in the SS package, and the engine codes CPA,CRX,CRN,CRW, were the one's that came on the SS. so from 69-72 the vin tells nothing about it being an SS or not.
