Unprofessional !  That's your opinionio and that's great.
 BUT I would be williing to BET that 90% of the floor's replaced are lap seam welded in.
 where you cut the NEW pan to fit a few inches bigger then the rused area.
You then lay it on top of the floor and spray paint  it outline on the floor and cut out the old floor leving about 1/2 to 3/4 lap  weld your new pan.

I sure wouldn't overlap weld a floor pan even in my driver. I think that would definitely be unprofessional.

On Team Chevelle. there is alot of info regarding that subject.  In a nut shell it's a straight forward deal if you have a welder (mig).  For show car's you but weld for drivers you overlap and weld. As long as the floor brace is not rusted it's not a big deal
