Check for vacuum leaks. I've had more than one motor that I was sure I assembled right suck air from somewhere. First I check vacuum lines, then I listen for telltale whistles while the engine is running. If I can't locate something that way I'll use a propane torch. I open the valve slightly and pass the nozzle around the base of the carburetor or around the edges of the intake manifold where it meets the heads. If you get the nozzle close to where a vacuum leak is it sucks in the propane and the engine smooths out. Just remember, you are using a flammable gas. Make sure you don't have a spark plug wire arcing somewhere first and do it in a very well ventilated area......like outside. There's no need to get too close to the distributor. There's nothing there that would be a vacuum leak anyway Spraying carburetor cleaner around the base of the carb and around the intake manifold will achieve the same results but carb cleaner is one of the best paint removers I've ever seen.
