I think this is a question that needs to be definitively 
answered.  Has GM in fact retained the rights to the 
aftermarket parts in question all these years, but 
simply chosen not to pursue any sort of licensing 
practices until now?  It seems to me (and me not being a 
lawyer) that had any patents and copyrights expired they 
wouldn't be able to do this.
