Thanks Rick. I got some more information that helped me and maybe other. First, the date on my computer was set wrong. I have corrected. I went to http://www.aircondition.com/wwwboard and was recommended that I change the Dyer and the expansion valve. Drain the oil out of the compressor and fill with HFC100 Ester oil. Clean out all the lines and other parts with Brake cleaner. I like your idea of using special A/C cleaner. Change the seals with the green type and use Nylog assembly lube. Then vacuum down the system. They sent me instruction to vacuum down and fill. If anyone else has information, please send it. When I change the system with the R134 do I also add charging oil with the R134 and how much? Keith Cooper

My info may be too late, but here is what I did to convert my 72. BTW - I read the chassis service manual & instruction that came with the A/C gauges and it was enuff edumacation to get thru. > > > It was all apart already. I blew out the evaporator & condensor & hoses with a "special A/C" cleaner I got from the parts store. Changed all o-rings to green type. Drained oil from compressor. New dryer. Added 134 type oil (Pag/ester????) to the compressor. My chassis service manual listed the amount, I can get the amount if you need it. Leak checked system. Added 80% (by volume) charge of the 134. Works great ( 42-44 degree air at vents). I used the stock POA and expansion valve. > > I've read of a replacement ($75-$90) for the POA valve which converts the system to a cycling system (engages/disengages) the A/C compressor clutch. Go to www.google.com and do a search for "POA valve update/upgrade" you will find several sites that explain how it works. I'm keeping the old POA though cause its working fine. > rick > > I con > ---------- "Keith Cooper" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > > The car is a 71 Chevelle with the stock A/C system. > I thought that the 71's used a expansion valve setup and did not have the accumilator. I was wanting to do the work myself to save money. I found a vacuum down unit that uses the air compressor. It sells for under $16.00. All I would need is to replace all the o-rings,the vacuum down unit, oil and freon. I just do not know if the expansion valve has to be replaced with something else if I change to R134. I had a friend that changed his 1991 IROC from R12 to R134 and it worked good. If I change to R134, I can refill it myself if needed. I want to learn how to change the system. I just need knowledge about how. I also need to know how much oil you have to add to a R134 system. I think that a 71 compressor uses about 3# of freon. > Keith Cooper > See my Chevelle: > http://home.mindspring.com/~keithc/index.html > > > > > rick schaefer > 72 El camino > http://members.home.net/jimmy4/rick1972elky.html > ACES #00140 > Team Chevelle #00038 > > > ----------------------------------------------------- > To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html > To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ----------------------------------------------------- To Unsubscribe please visit www.chevelles.net/list.html To start a new topic, send mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
