Another Data Point: When I first got my '70 Chevelle 12 years ago, it had air shocks. When pumped up (80psi) I would get bad wheel hop. Letting the air down to 20-30 was enough to eliminate. IMO, air shocks are junk. They provide no damping action in the upward (extending) direction, and when pumped up to level out a car, you're putting a lot of stress on the upper shock mount -- stress it wasnt designed to handle.
My car currently has poly rear bushings, non-boxed arms, and regular parts-store shocks, and Hotchkis springs. I have no wheel hop -- just some nice 1.8x 60-foot times at the dragstrip. :-) Wheel hop is generally caused from too much wind-up in the axle assembly. Picture the axle from the side in a rest position. When force is applied via the pinion (and the tires having good traction), the pinion gear will try to "climb" the ring gear until either the tires start to move, or until all the slack is taken up in the bushings, etc. Eventually, the slack will be taken up and it will want to rotate back in the other direction (counter-force from bushings, etc). Do all of this a few times and you'll have wheel hop. I wish I could describe it better. Air shocks and gas charged shocks would act the same on the axle, pushing it down. Does anybody have any experience with this as a cause of wheel hop? A few reported samples should prove or disprove this theory.
