Well basically... do your research. I'd really suggest finding some old school books and articles by some of the greats like Grumpy Jinkens (sp?) and Smokey Yunick. You also can ask local dyno/race motor shops. Most of those guys have seen everything and will tell you what is good and what is a dud because they want you to be happy with their shop. Another way is to go toi a local race track... either circle or drag and talk to the guys with good times and the proven winners. Some guys are jerks, but many are very nice and will be happy to tell you some things. Amatuer days are generally the best bet as many professionals don't care to disclose their tricks. The last way to go is buy a proven combo. GM has a 383 stroker motor that sells for 3500-4000 and makes over 400 ft-lbs of torque. CHP has been changing cams and such and has gotten some good numbers. Many shops will build you a motor that is guarenteed to make a certin power and they will break it in on a dyno and verify the power. Desktop Dyno can also be a great tool for figure general power figures. Most cam companies have tech lines that do a good job selectin a cam for you if you have all the info they need.

A general rule of thumb and old racer used to tell me is that the guy with the best cylinder heads wins. That is pretty true. Spend you big bucks on your heads and always get at least a 3 angle valve job on and "outta the box" head. Port work is worth it's weight in gold.

As my mom always said... Keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. At least it worked for me... and still is. Just talked to my buddy who owns a shop and were discussing the disappointment he had in the Air Gap manifolds.
