I thought a crate motor just referred to the factor that the motor block / head were complete and sold in a wooden crate. A crate motor is a motor which has all the major machining completed. A motor which usually includes the block,crank,cam,heads, but can come in more completed stages. Some new crate motors are fully completed, just down in and start.
