Bill, Rocky and John - thank you for the feed back. Marvel Mystery oil looks like a safe direction.
I'll second Rocky's opinion. Marvel isn't an "instant fix" method but it has worked for me in the past. I believe it has a high detergent content and doesn't resort to using harsh solvents. The diesel fuel / trans fluid methods sound too dangerous to me. Remember, if it will wash crud out of your lifters quickly it will wash the lubricant out of your main and rod bearings too. I would rather replace several sets of lifters than one set of rod and main bearings and have to deal with all the machining issues that go along with it.
