Jim, Make sure you do the initial valve adjustment by manually turning the motor over until each cylinder is at tdc & take the slack out of the rockers. Then manually turn the motor over until # 1 cylinder is at about 5 degrees before tdc. Then prime the oil pump by spinning the shaft where the distributor goes in with a drill. (You can buy or rent a tool for this). Then put the distributor in making sure it is timed to fire on # 1 cylinder, then put the cap & wires on making sure of the firing order. Then make sure the fuel lines, pump, carb, vacuum lines, etc are all connected properly. Once everything is ready to go, disconnect the coil or distributor wire & crank the motor over a few times & listen for unusual noises, etc. If it seems to crank ok, replace the wire & fire it up. Once it fires make sure you have oil pressure, check for fuel leaks, adjust the timing & carb settings so it will stay running & then adjust the valves. That's about as good as I can give you for an off the top of my head start up for an unknown engine. Others may be able to add to this. Good Luck! Don
