As long as you have it apart and the heads off, now is an easy time to find TDC. It'll make it much easier to drop the distributor in the correct phase so it'll fire right up. I'd also check the timing chain for slop. Now would be a good time to replace it as well.
I'd also check for ring wear. If a valve job is being done it'll seal the top side and if your rings are weak, it'll blow right by them.
