I'd shy away from chemicals that would dry rubber out myself. A wise old
rascal once told me to use hand cleaner ...fortified with lanolin
(usually a white creamy type) on rubber parts. Leaves rubber parts
looking like new after they soak in it for a while, in addition to
cleaning. Although it might cause some pieces to expand...so keep that
in mind.

Lacquer thinner or Acetone works pretty good. It'll make almost any
rubber look like new. Although it does seem to remove a small amount of
the surface of the rubber. I usually just soak a rag and wipe the
rubber with it. Proceed with caution I think you could over do it.
I've never had a
problem but thought it would be prudent to warn you.

I'm about to replace the vent window gaskets in my el camino. The
gaskets have been sitting a while. They have a white film on them that
I can't get off. I've tried dish soap & simple green. Anyone have a
suggestion on a cleaner? I'd like them black before I install them.
I thought that it was just a powder protectant.
