Josh,
You and I think alike here!  I am taking a small block car with an automatic, and converting it to a 396/402 with a 4 speed.

I have never owned a big block before. The closest was a 389 GTO ....and it was a blast, but I think it was still a small block for Pontiac.

So Big Block experience will be new for me.......other than my dad's "yank tank" 71 Chevy Kingswood wagon..(must have weighed close to 6,000lbs)..and that don't count ...does it?

What year car JD?
Regardless, I say
1: any HP car could get a 4 speed.
2:NO , there is no way to tell which motor unless it was pre-69 or a 72.
3:Bucket's /console could be ordered on any car.
4: Personally I absolutely LOVE 4 speed BB Chevelles! If I bought a nice car that was auto, I'd convert it to a 4 speed!

Subject: [Chevelle-List] ss verification and power plant

I have found a ton of info however I'm still lacking. I am 99.9% sure that my SS is a true SS. What im not 99% sure of is the power plant that originally came in it. I am very interested in trying to make it as close to original as possible.Prior to receiving this car the 1st time 15 years ago someone had removed the 396 and 4speed. I know this as there is a manual hump in the floor pan and the linkage bracket is still on the frame. I also remeber the owner at that time verifing this info. I could ramble for hours I suppose so I will list questions im unsure of.

1. Was a 4 speed avalible on all HP 396 motorsor only certain hp?
2. Is there any other way to figure exackly what motor came in a SS with out the build sheet.
2. Did the bucket / console/tach option only come on SS models?
3. If it came with a four speed what are the pros and cons of going back with one. I did enjoy it being an automatic <G>

Thanks for your time,
Regards
