Dan,

IIRC the engine code started appearing in the VIN sometime in the early '70s.  
VINs from earlier years simply indicated the number of cylinders unless the VIN 
indicated a specific model for which only 1 engine was available, in which case 
you'd know the engine by default.  Are you wondering about your Impala?
