I looked at a Mustang convertible once that had so much floorboard rot that the passenger side door was pinched shut and would no longer open. My guess is that if it was opened, the car would have folded in half. That's why the support from underneath is so much more important on convertibles.

The most notorious was when the F body 'vert was built by American Sunroof (ASC). They took production hardtops and cut the roof off and installed a ragtop without doing any stiffening work.
