I always have my cars up on 4 jackstands, whether its the 70 SS, the 69 Malibu, or my daily driver 86 Cutlass. In fact, my 69 is up on 4 stands right now. How else are ya suppose to put in a transmission if you don't have a lift or access to one. When I do this, I always put the front end up first. I center the jackstands under the lower control arms so that the bottom of the shock rest in the cradle of the jack stand. When I jack up the rear, I put the jackstands under the frame where the lower trailing arm mounts are since all of my cars have sway bars on them and I cannot let the sway bar sit onthe jack stand. It also allows the rear suspension to relax and gives me a little more room to clean it up for a show or something.
