The name "12 bolt" rear end is referring to the 12 bolt carrier not the 12 bolt cover. So what your describing is a 10 bolt Olds rear end. It makes no difference if it has a 12 bolt cover.

not really because it is still a 12 bolt, and it does have a 12 bolt cover just like the Chevy rear. The only difference is the carrier, it uses a 10 bolt carrier and bolt in axles. There is nothing wrong with an Olds 12 bolt. I have one that I may rebuild to throw under my 70.
