Oh yeah, depending on the air cleaner you're using currently, you might find that you need to replace it to avoid a clearance problem with a typical large-body HEI.  My 14" drop-base fits, but just barely.

You need a distributor, a piece of 12 ga. wire, and plug wires.  Don't forget to regap your plugs.
 
 
 
FWIW, I got a free GM unit from a friend of mine, but Dave (Dave's Smallbody HEIs) knows his stuff.  I plan to send him my old points unit for conversion in the future.

I have decided to go with an HEI conversion from the current points set up. I am running a 383 stroker. Please advise on all parts I need for this conversion. I am not worried about "correct" distributor appearance and prefer the GM HEI or other HEI over the Petronix from what I read here.
