I thought the 700-R4 was based off the TH400 and not the TH350?  There are quite a few 9 and 10 second Buick GN/T-type, etc that run modified 200-4Rs and Art Carr has one for $1599 with a 12" converter that'll handle 700hp.  For heavier cars they do recommend the 700-R4 - http://www.artcarr.com/faq.html#faq8

All a 700R4/4L60 is, is a TH350 with Overdrive.  They both use all the same parts except the valve body.  The thing about the 2004R is the fact that it cannot handle massive amounts of torque, such as what a big block or a stroker will put out.  By the time you put all that $$ into a 2004R to make it able to handle anything, you can have a nice 700R4 built and get a nice new driveshaft made, and it still ends up being cheaper.  I can have a severe heavy duty 700R4 built for $900 including the converter by my tranny guy.  He has people run them with 10 second big blocks w/o any problems.  I say the only thing the 2004R is good for is being put behind a stock built 305, that and a boat anchor :-).
