Thanks, I'm no trans expert but I have a lot of info. from work. Your trans is a 4L60E. It's a great trans that was to be used only in the Sierra. At least that's what it was designed for at first.  The pan is square and it should have 16 pan bolts holding it in place. The torque rating is 350 lb/ft. The gear ratio is 1st- 3.05, 2nd- 1.62, 3rd- 1.0 and OD- .69.

  You have helped me identify my "mystery" trans in the past (turbo 400 with the "CT" code).  So, when you talk about transmissions, I listen.  Hopefully others will as well.  Now that I've "buttered" you up, could you help me identify the trans in my truck.  I have looked in the owners manual, and the original sales brochures, to no avail.  The truck is a 2002 GMC Sonoma Crew Cab - the little truck w/4 full doors and 4WD.  I was guessing 4L60E, but not sure.  Is there a way to use the pan to identify, like the earlier turbo 350 vs. turbo 400's ?  And, what would the torque rating be ?

Tom, I don't know where you got your information. All the 700R4 is a 350? And all we did was put a valve body on it to make it shift 4 times. Do you really think this? The 350 was a medium duty trans built from 1969 to 1989. It was used in 6 cylinder and small V8's. It could handle 425 pounds of torque. The 375B is a heavey duty 350. The 700R4 was put behind 455 engines among others. Doesn't sound like a 350 to me. The 700 in 1992 became the 4L60. Later the E was added to mean electronic shifting. For those who are wondering...
The 4 is 4 speed, L is longitude, (rear wheel) and 60 is a rating for strength. The higher the rating the stronger the trans.
The 3L80 is a renamed 400. The 3L80HD is a 475.
The 4L80 is a 400 trans with OD, and the 4L80E is electronic.
The 200-4R and the 700-R4 have overdrive planetary gears and use a lock up converter. The 200R4 and the 700-4R are very close in torque rate. The 200R4 has a deeper OD and deeper 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. Anyone thinking of buying a 200R4, be sure it says METRIC on the pan. If it doesn't, your getting a plain 200. Also, in case someone wanted to know, a "T" in the trans designation means transaxel. (Front wheel). After working 30 years at Hydra-matic (now it's called Power Train) I have managed to save some data both in my head and in my library. I have worked on or had dealings with almost every trans we made. And I take exception that someone thinks all we did was change a valve body and call it a 4 speed. Most of this info is from my records so I know it's accurate.

All a 700R4/4L60 is, is a TH350 with Overdrive.  They both use all the same parts except the valve body.  The thing about the 2004R is the fact that it cannot handle massive amounts of torque, such as what a big block or a stroker will put out.  By the time you put all that $$ into a 2004R to make it able to handle anything, you can have a nice 700R4 built and get a nice new driveshaft made, and it still ends up being cheaper.  I can have a severe heavy duty 700R4 built for $900 including the converter by my tranny guy.  He has people run them with 10 second big blocks w/o any problems.  I say the only thing the 2004R is good for is being put behind a stock built 305, that and a boat anchor :-).
