I've been through
some of this myself. It is really easy to pop off the valve covers and
test a few things. If there is a bent pushrod, it will be obvious.
If your engine has cork valve cover gaskets, it should be a really easy time to
remove and replace the covers. If not, then you have to budget some time
for cleaning the old goop off and a new cork gasket.
My bet is that you
will have a loose rocker. If something is bent, you will not be able to
tighten it enough to correctly adjust the valve. You can then loosen it
and pull the pushrod to check it out. If the pushrod is good, then you
know it has to be the valve (or a really rare problem with the rocker or
stud). If you have the time and want to learn, you can pull the heads and
have them worked on, or buy a set of aftermarket heads and do the swap.
It is not too bad
a job, mostly wrenching. You will need a torque wrench to do this, but
nothing else specialized. The heads are heavy but manageable. If you want to do
the head swap, you remove the intake, then the heads. Installation is the
reverse. The hardest part is getting the intake to seal well at the
front and rear of the block...

I'm gonna check my Haynes and see if I can figure it out. Jim told me that by putting my notches on the timing sprockets together that I set the timing to the 6 cyl or 180 degrees out of timing. I tried to set the timing correct and turn the distributor 180 degrees.. it would even start then. So no matter what it spurts gas out the carb like the engines going... turn, turn, turn, spurt... turn, turn, turn, spurt... I'll look into those pushrods.
