I need to do the rear axle bearings this Saturday on my 69 El Camino. I
don't know much about the rear except that it is a peg-leg, and the yoke
uses bolts &a strap to hold the U-joint in, which I'm told means it's a
10-bolt. Does this rear have C-clips? What's the deal on getting those out?
I presume they would have to come off first. I want to take the diff cover
off anyway to drain the old oil out, so no big deal if I have to get in
there.

Hey John,

Here are some steps for ya for doing the rear
Pull the cover, let the oil drain out.  Pull the tires and drums off.  Now comes the fun part.  There is a small bolt/pin that holds the large center pin in the carrier in.  It is a 7/16" bolt, back it out carefully as these things like to snap.  Now that the large pin is out, push the axles inwards so that you can get the C-Clips out, you will need 2 people to do this if you have never done it before.  Use a magnet to catch the C-clips then pull the axles out.  I usea long pole and a hammer to get the axle bearings out, but if you have the tool its no problem.  Just reverse the process to put it back together.  It's a fairly simple process, I've done it many times.
