Thanks for the tip. But I have a question. Since there is (presumably) oil coming out the leak is there enough vacuum to really help pull the RTV in?

There is NO vacuum--if anything there is crankcase pressure. The only place you will see vacuum is in the intake ports. Seal it & let it set for 4~6 hrs to allow the RTV to cure. It will not seal in the presence of oil.
