I know what your talking about. I use to be a stereo installer and made/designed some very trick and awesome systems. One of which was $10,000 for a customer who had more money than brains.
Anyway...the black tar like stuff works great. I'd use it over Dynamat hands down. It makes that car have a petroleum smell for about a week, but it totally goes away. You can cut that pieces to any size and shape, then place it where you want it...if you don't like it there, the pull it off and stick it again until your satisfied. BUT, once this material get's hot (summerday) IT STICKS. It's not permanent, so it won't ruin anything. If you need to remove it after it's adheared really good, then it will pull off, but you'll need you clean away the residue with praticaly any petroleum liquid...even WD-40 will do.

My friend is a contractor and he got it from one of his suppliers so it's got to be relativly easy to find.

What I have found that works good and not real expensive as opposed to
aftermarket houses is ice dam felt for roofing. It is thick and self
sticking, and your local Home Depot will carry it.
