Both 5th and 6th gear are overdrive ratios,Scott. 5th gear is .75 or 25% overdriven and 6th gear is .50 or 50% overdriven. In other words,a 4.10 rear axle ratio becomes a 3.08 final drive ratio in 5th and a 2.05 final drive ratio in 6th. Right now,my 69 has a 3.25 or 3.50 rear cog so I rarely use 6th gear unless the road is long and flat. <g> Will be installing another ring & pinion around a 3.90-4.30 ratio after I install the new BB. I have a Muncie H/D 3 speed (Standard) in my '69 SS 396. Dan Carr tells me that that's a pretty rare arrangement. I intend to keep it stock anyway as it is a recently aquired family heirloom but I was curious about the five and six speeds that are available nowadays. I would like to get another Chevelle or an Elky to "hop up" but that will be a ways down the road. I have to restore my '69 first and put it back to the condition it was in when my grandfather bought it new. I was 8 months old when he bought it and still think it's pretty cool that he was 67 years old when he purchased it.
