The setup is really for lacquers and acrylic enamels. The size of the fluid tip is 1.8mm. The needle and fluid tip should be changed to at least a 1.6mm tip to be used with the newer basecoat clearcoat materials. The air cap would work, but there are newer more efficient air caps, such as the 9000, available. The cost to change the gun to the smaller fluid tip, needle and air cap would probably make looking into a newer gun advisable.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s an excellent gun and it would work with the newer medium solids clears and basecoat systems, just not as good as a gun with the proper setup. The newer products need to be atomized better than the older lacquers and acrylic enamels so a smaller fluid tip / needle / air cap combo restricts fluid flow more precisely than screwing in the knob that controls the needle movement.
By the way, it’s not an HVLP. Some areas require the use of HVLP equipment but the “paint police” have a hell of a time enforcing that one.
