My story:
1) I have a 64 2 dr wagon with 15x8 steel rims with 5"' backspace mounting 265/50-15
BFG T/A radials.
No cutting of anything.
2) The 64 2 dr hardtop had an old ARE Trans-Am replacement wheel which was 16x8 w/
4.75 B/S and 245/50-16 Comp T/A's.
These were a problem since car sat lower than wagon and the backspace was just a bit
short.
Side wall scuffed along about a 6" area towards rear of wheel arch. A bit of cutting
and bending removed offending part of wheel lip.
Anyhow, you can recieve a lot of bad advice from people (in and outside of tire and
wheel shops) who don't fully appreciate how tight the wheel wells are.
If you can borrow something close to what you want and see how it fits you'll be way
ahead. (adding or subtracting backspace from a known wheel to get tire clearance)
Of course finding the wheel you like in the proper size, well, good luck!
I've gotten in the habit of scoping out the wheel and tire size of 64 and 65 Chevelles
I see at car shows to see what they got in there. Usually any owner with serious
rubber is happy to talk about how he did it.
