If it is of any help I am currently running 17X9.5" American Racing Torq
Thrust II wheels with 275X40 BFG rubber. The wheels have 5.75"bs. The rear
axle was changed over to a stock GM (65 vintage) 12 bolt, with no
alterations done to it. All this on my 65 GTO, which I assume has the same
wheel and body issues as your elky.

Are you sure you don't have a late model rear end (wider)? There's a
fella on TC with a 65 Elky running 17x9.5 w/5.5" bs and 285x40x17
tires.
