It's interesting to try and figure out the decision making process that
went down at Chevy in 1970 and 71. They knew it was the end of the hi po era
with Uncle Sam coming down on them with clean air laws and the insurance co
made it very expensive for a guy under 25 to drive a hi Hp car. The Camaro
and Corvette was running late in production. They axe the 454 Camaro and no
LS6 for the 70 Corvette. Early production Chevelle has a 375 HP L78 which
would out run the 454 LS5. Normally Corvette has the highest HP engine
rating but then comes the King Kong 454 LS6 with 450 Hp rating. Did Chevy do
it because they had the engines already ordered for the Corvette?
Did some old drag racer who made it up the ranks to management authorize the
LS6 as a last ditch effort to make hi Hp car to compete with the Hemi and
Boss 429 Ford?
Then in 1971 they make an LS6 Corvette with alu heads and no LS6 for
Chevelle or Camaro. Can't figure it out.
