If you use carb cleaner, I think it will take the lettering right off. -Dave

I ended up using a bucket of water with some castrol super clean and a small scrub brush. It was pretty easy and the wires came out looking like new - and the lettering on the wires is still there. Just put a bit of it on a rag and wipe them down.
