I like your idea of keping things clean.
I dont know much about moving that firewall metal around, but you could just make the 
hole of another shape.

If what you need to get enough air is 17x3" (51sq.in. of area) you would have the same 
amount of air using a hole which is eg 20,5x2,5" or 25,5x2"
I would not go very narrow (like 0,5" or 1") because there is something about the 
airflow along the wall etc. I'm not an expert but its for sure possible to read in a 
book somewhere.

of course you would need to modify the duct as well, but that should not be a problem 
I think ??.

I dont know if this is doable at all but you could always consider it.
