Also check the timing with the light after the vacuum is reconnected and let us know what it is .. could be something wrong with the mechanism in the distributor. I saw on one time that would retard the timing when vacuum was hooked up. Seems like I remember that something to do with the linkage inside the distributor was backwards or something to that effect.
