A December 2003 article in Recycling Today predicted this increase in steel prices. Doesn't sound like it's gonna get much better in the near future either.
http://www.recyclingtoday.com/news/news.asp?ID=5068 It sounds like the increased use by China is nothing out of the ordinary for the region. They're just bigger than the other nations trying to improve their manufacturing capabilities. I read a couple other articles (Forbes, WSJ, etc.) that were similar. The increase in prices appears to be caused by a combination of the removal of import tariffs late last year, a weak dollar, and rising shipping costs (read that as fuel cost) Sucks, but I doubt it's a sinister plot by the Chinese. Although... They might be hoarding steel now, hoping to get the price even higher, while waiting for the dollar to fall farther... so they can sell it back to us at a big big profit??!! Or, maybe they're just getting ready to invade Taiwan as Bill said... At any rate, Nostradamus I am not. Wishing the prices stayed lower I am. - James --- "H.
