I would guess that inline fuel pumps are quieter but I still run an external one (Accel 74701) for my Accel/DFI unit. IMO, if it's mounted securely with the rubber lined shock mounts (http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/acc-74701.jpg), once the engine is running, you should never hear it - I don't hear mine. I DO listen for it to come on when I turn the key on, just to ensure it's working.
It takes NO modifications to the fuel tank and it's accessible for replacement with much less effort than dropping the tank and replacing it.
