Powder coating is touched up with aerosol cans that match the color.  Like many liquid paints there are several technologies in powder.  Yes powder is a tough finish.  Unless you have a very high end powder a liquid paint system is more durable.  I work for a major paint company in the OEM field for 20 years.  Powder requires a very clean substrate and a full cure (usually about 10 minutes at around 400 metal temp) to be any good.  My $.02

Subject: [Chevelle-list] RE: POR-15 vs powdercoating

Ive heard a lot of good things about powder coating but a couple of negatives but maybe it was just a bad experience of an engine builder.  I was going to have some parts done and one engine builder advised against it saying the process built up a layer on the parts and was easily cracked and/or chipped (as opposed to simply being marred like paint) making it almost impossible to touch up.

Is powder coating that susceptible to damage?  With everything from frames to suspension pieces being done, it doesnt appear so.  Like I said, maybe he just had a bad experience with it or maybe he didnt like the local power coating establishment. :*)
