My 2 cents on this thread is this: POR 15 is great stuff. But it is not designed for use on clean metal. It is formulated to "paint over rust". That is what POR means. It does an outstanding job when used correctly, but it is not a great chassis paint. It also requires a top coat if used where it will be exposed to the elements.(uv) I don't have a local powder coat operation available to me, so that is not a good option for me. I sandblast a chassis, prime with a self etching primer (I use Dupont Vari Prime) and spray with flattened Imron black. This is very tough paint and holds up for many years against normal wear and tear. What I have heard from those using powder coat on frame parts has all been good. I wish it were available to me.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] RE: POR-15 vs powdercoating

Ive heard a lot of good things about powder coating but a couple of negatives but maybe it was just a bad experience of an engine builder.  I was going to have some parts done and one engine builder advised against it saying the process built up a layer on the parts and was easily cracked and/or chipped (as opposed to simply being marred like paint) making it almost impossible to touch up.

Is powder coating that susceptible to damage?  With everything from frames to suspension pieces being done, it doesnt appear so.  Like I said, maybe he just had a bad experience with it or maybe he didnt like the local power coating establishment. :*)
