My first thought is that it's time for a new battery. In addition to that,
you may want to pull the alternator and have it checked. Since those are
the most obvious things, I'd concentrate on them first. Once you've
established they're good (or bad), then you can start troubleshooting other
areas of your system.

One other thing, do you have an HEI distributor? If you do, it needs a full
12 volts to work properly, if the battery and alternato aren't up to snuff,
then the engine won't run right. Also, the module inside the distributor
can go bad once in a while. More food for thought.

This is a new one on me and I wonder if any of you recognize this
particular set of symptoms:

The car has been acting fine, starting up easily (except for a
problem sometimes with the neutral safety switch, so I have to give
the gearshift an extra shove into Park before starting it.). Today,
I started it up and saw that I had no dash lights except the
generator light (which has been acting erraticly for months) and the
Fasten Seat Belt light. After driving it a few blocks, I noticed
that my head and tail lights were very dim, and my hazards werent
working at all. Another mile, and the car suddenly loses most of its
power, struggling along at about ten miles an hour. A couple blocks
of this and it dies on me and wont restart. I tried a jump-start and
the battery wouldnt even respond. So I got it towed home.

Right now, if I try to start it, there is no sound at all, not even
a click. If I turn the ignition to On, I get no dash lights except
the Fasten Seat Belt, the Generator, and the Oil. I can turn on the
headlights and tail lights, but they're fairly dim. I can work the
radio and the wipers, but the wipers are slow, about half-speed.

Two possible culprits: We've been having a whole lot of rain -- I'm
in San Francisco -- and the battery is a 7-year battery, just a
little over 7 years old.

Any ideas?
