A bad battery won't cause a running engine to slowly die. A bad alternator will. Did you try starting it then disconnecting the positive terminal?

Not too good, I guess. A mechanic friend of mine says that you shd really get a reading of about 13.5 volts. And he also says that to know if the alternator is charging right, you also have to read the amperage. ?????????????
