A bad battery won't cause a running engine to slowly die. A bad alternator
will. Did you try starting it then disconnecting the positive terminal?

Subject: [Chevelle-list] More on the alternator(?) problem

Tonight, after driving ten miles with the headlights on, I got a
voltage reading off the new battery of 12.11 with the engine running
and the lights still on. Not too good, I guess. A mechanic friend of
mine says that you shd really get a reading of about 13.5 volts.

And he also says that to know if the alternator is charging right,
you also have to read the amperage.

?????????????
