The better ones had up to 20 coats of clear and therein is the problem. Back then clear and sunlight did not like each other. Talk about cracking. Looked like a 100 year old's face. On a bad day. Bet they have the problem fixed by now.

When I was a kid, they had a 3 window coop come through town, it was painted
metal flake Green...Damndest color I have ever seen in the sun!! I keep
thinking about painting my car in metal flake, but I remember in the old
days they had 5 or 6 hand rubbed coats of lacquer. I never heard about
upkeep!?

Dare to be different. Check with a paint supplier on care & upkeep.
I wonder if the modern day paint compounds can't carry the
metalflake??? A good metalflake paint job sure looked good.

I see metal flake on old cars....they are referred to as "lowriders" -----Original Message----- From: Dan Mascheck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 21:00:11 -0600 Subject: [Chevelle-list] Paint Metal Flake

When I was a kid, Metal Flake paint was the rage for hot rods...What
ever
happened to it? I still see bass boats metal flake, but no cars. I see
all
the new pearlescent and other unique paints, but no metal flake!

What
kind of problems do you have with maintenance? Cost? Application? I
want to
repaint my Chevelle and was thinking about the old metal Flake as
an
option!

I'm also wondering if anyone knows a good paint shop in Houston,
TX
surrounding or the area!
