My dad, my brother (73 Rallye Challenger & 87 T/A) & I (69 Chevelle
SS396) went to Spring Carlisle on Thursday.
Like Bob said earlier, it was a bit cool (with the wind!) when we arrived
at 7am, but with the light jackets we brought, it was bearable (we saw
your $5 sweatshirts, Bob, on the way in, but passed on them). By mid-AM
and then through the day, the weather was perfect (temp was in the
mid-60s, mostly cloudy with no blinding sun & dry - in the decade we've
been going to Spring, we've seen just about everything from cold enough
for snow to mid-90s).
Seems like every year, there's less car parts & more car diecasts, car
models & non-car stuff (wallets, watches, clothes, etc. - can't complain
TOO much about it, though, as my brother & I were happily surprised to
find a guy selling every auto-related patch known in the Universe for a
couple bucks apiece and we had some fun going down memory lane digging
through the piles finding exact versions of patches we bought on Saturday
nights as kids when our dad took us to Cecil County dragway in the early
70s back when we used to see Jungle Jim match race against Brutus and
when they used to run the Pro Stock national events with everyone from
Grumpy to Butch Leal to Old Reliable, etc.).
Back to the here & now, though, besides buying a couple of Chevelle
patches (couldn't pass on THOSE), I only bought a new chrome aircleaner
lid from the Ausleys tent for my 69 SS (nice to save that shipping) and
my brother got a good deal on a pair of used but good condition unilug
style Cragar SS 15x6's for his Challenger.
In the car corral, as usual there were good deals & ridiculous ripoffs.
E.G. there was a nice condition 70 Charger R/T 440 magnum that looked
nice enough, but for the life of me I couldn't figure out why it would be
priced $85k (and neither can my friend in Texas who owns a GTX Hemi &
440-6 Cuda).
On the other end, though, I saw a few A-bodies that I thought were decent
deals:
- 70 GSX Buick (copper color) with a good body, good interior, nothing
visibly wrong and a good strong sounding 455 motor for $17,500 negotiable
- 70 GTO 455 white with a good body, good interior, nothing visibly wrong
for $17,900
- 68 Chevell Nomad (yeah, I've always been a sucker for a 68-69 Chevelle
wagon & someday I may buy one) with transplanted 454, a good body and
nothing visible wrong for $15kobo
Out of curiousity, were those among the sold or still there later in the
weekend?
