Either would be fine.  All that matters is that it's a source of manifold
vacuum.

Yes.  The crankcase needs a filtered source of fresh air in order for
the PCV system to work properly.  If you're modifying some existing
valve covers for the PCV valve and the breather, consider installing
a baffle or shield under them to keep the oil away.
