Matt, Old kitchen cabinets are really good idea; especially if they're free! Floor space becomes real valuable in a garage, no matter how big you go. I built, in the old garage, a 18" shelf along the back wall for storage of items not needed on a weekly basis, extra parts, paint, etc. The advantage of the shelf 8' off the ground, I had 10' ceilings, was two fold; I had an extra 40 or so sq foot of storage space off the floor and I could take a sight inventory anytime at a glance. I opted not to put storage in my attic in the present garage because I was afraid it would become a morgue; you know "Out of sight, out of mind". Plus, with 12' ceilings, getting up there would be more of a PITA than it was worth.
I bought used industrial grade racks, much like ones you see at Lowes or Home Depot, very reasonably. I have two 2' deep x 8' long x 10' tall racks in my garage and still have space for a 4' x 8' workbench along the back wall; remember I'm 28' deep. Again, I can see all that I have stored "At a glance" and it is somewhat organized. Also, top shelf is a great place for stereo speakers. The only other advice I could offer to you right now would be either build your garage bigger than you think you need, or build it so you could expand it later. Consider this; your Elky is 17' or 18' long, right? So let's say you park in the garage with you back bumper 1' away from the door; not a lot of space. That leaves you with 5 or 6 foot in front. Is that enough room? Is the Elky going to be the only resident? The extended space is actually 10x20 which is plenty of space for what I had in mind....all my tools, air compressor, fridge, cabinets, and a workbench. What I've seen at Sears or similar places is that cabinets and workbenches are expensive. I'm thinking about building my own or finding someone's old kitchen cabinets to recycle.
