You could use a vacuum gauge to
set the ignition timing. Just hook up the gauge to manifold vacuum and adjust
the timing for your highest vacuum reading, tighten the distributor, remove the
gauge and test drive.
Easy to do with a stock or
nearly stock engine, I don't know how a big cam might effect the
reading.
