Pelle, There isn't an exact position that the distributor has to hit. As long as you can rotate it enough to allow the timing you need it is right. If you have vacuum advance, you are limited as to how much you can rotate your distributor, so you would have to adjust that one or two teeth off enough to get the timing set without hitting the manifold or firewall etc.
It sounds like you are where you need to be.

Even if I've found the exact spot of TDC, isn't there's always a risk
that I drop the distributor a tooth off or two!?
(Making the timing mark misaligned vs. rotor?)
 
How do they do it in the factory to make sure they get
the ignition system 100% lined up all the way from
#1 piston to rotor?
